A blue-violet gemstone and a variety of the mineral zoisite. It is exclusively found in a very small mining area near Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Almost all tanzanite is heat-treated to achieve its desirable blue-violet color. It is a soft-to-medium hardness stone (6 to 7 on the Mohs scale).
