A gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, famous for its distinct yellowish-green to deep lime color, which comes from the iron in its composition. It is unique as one of the few gems formed deep in the Earth's mantle. Peridot has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7 and is the birthstone for August.
